The field of video games has always been rising and being more widely spread around the world. During the talk of Walsh in my ENGL 256B class I was able to learn several things about video games and how they are related to digital humanities that I didn’t know before. My favorite video game is Grand Theft Auto which was released in 2013 and is all about driving and involves shooting. I love games that require action and suspense.
Digital humanities play a big role in writing and the formation of video games. We can link this through the codes, maps, data networks that are formed to be able to form the base of the game. Mr. Walsh showed that he is very creative and has visualization skills because this is what the making of video games requires. What Mr. Walsh asserted on was that the first thing that must be done before producing a video game is to be able to create a story, and when thinking o this story, you need to have visual skills.
You should then make a broad analysis of the budget, platform, and genre. After coming up with all those steps, the real making of the video game starts. Also, Walsh talked about social media. If you created a video game, you can’t just create it and believe that it is going to be successful all the time, because you need to stay up to date with all the changes and modifications that need to be done based on people’s preferences.
Walsh talked about a very interesting topic, which is the Three Act Structure. The three-actstructure is a model used in narrative fiction that divides a story into three parts (acts), often called the Setup, the Confrontation and the Resolution. He explained it in a way that is the first step being the intention (wanting something), the second being trying to get what you want, and the third is either success or failure.
Mr Walsh’s talk allowed me to see video games from a different perspective and I was able to see what is behind them and to realize the effort that video game creators put into these games. Also, his talk made me analyze video games now and see which one is actually a successful one and which is a failure .
